Fang Visual as part of our continued attempts to show everyone who doesn't already love the Blues Explosion to death that they are totally missing the boat, we're re-releasing the 'Plastic Fang' CD on September 10 with a free DVD shrinkwrapped to it as a free bonus. The disc includes the promotional videos for "She Said" and "Sweet and Sour", along with performance and interview footage from places far and wide --- some seriously crazy stuff, after watching this DVD you might wonder why certain TV programs have neglected to book this band (possibly for fear of making all subsequent musical guests look lame by comparison). 'Fang Visual' has its own slipcase sleeve.

The music of Don "Captain Beefheart" Van Vliet is like certain works of literature: lots of people talk about how great it supposedly is, but relatively few have ever actually heard (or read) it. That could change with the release of Captain Beefheart – Under Review, an absorbing, comprehensive, and lengthy (nearly two hours) overview of this idiosyncratic character's career that serves as the musical equivalent of a Cliffs Notes for, say, James Joyce's Finnegans Wake. Van Vliet retired from music in the early '80s in order to devote himself to painting, his first love; a disclaimer lets us know that neither he nor anyone in his immediate circle authorized this British-made film, and although there is lots of Beefheart music to be found here, the Captain himself is not interviewed. Plenty of others are, including many of the musicians who populated Beefheart's Magic Band over the years. Along with a host of critics and other "experts," they cover all the bases, from his earliest recording (a performance of the semi-hit "Diddy Wah Diddy" from the '60s teen TV show Where the Action Is is just one of the extraordinary number of video clips included) to his last (the 1982 album Ice Cream for Crow). The consensus: Beefheart's sound, though obviously rooted in the Delta blues (especially Howlin' Wolf's), was unlike anyone else's. With Trout Mask Replica, he blended a surreal sense of humor with dense, fragmented, seemingly chaotic (but painstakingly rehearsed) music; many others followed, including a few ill-conceived attempts at a more commercial sound, but that 1969 double album is still considered his masterpiece, a work that "reinvented conventional song form." Some of the filmmakers' choices are preposterous: drummer John "Drumbo" French is interviewed in a tree, talking into a telephone, while pompous Brit critic Alan Clayson holds forth from a church pulpit. But by and large, Captain Beefheart – Under Review is, as the Captain's himself put it, "fast and bulbous." --Sam Graham

Product Description
Captain Beefheart - Under Review is a two hour documentary film tracing the roots and history of this iconic musical legend. It features rare live and studio performances of Beefheart, interspersed with contributions from virtually all members of The Magic Band along with a panel of esteemed experts. The film also features rarely seen promo films, interview footage with Beefheart, TV clips, location shots and a host of other features. Covering his entire musical career and loaded with extra features, this is not simply the only Beefheart DVD on the commercial market, it is also the best ever film about the man and his music yet to emerge.

John Doe And The Sadies - Country Club

John Doe And The Sadies - Country Club
Yep Roc, 2009 | Mp3 VBR Near 256k | 52 MB | 15 Songs, 40 Min.

Product Description
In true honky tonk style, Country Club is the bastard child of a drunken
promise. A post show hang-out between X & the Knitters John Doe
and The Sadies produced the idea to join forces to a make an album of country songs. Both rock n roll and country music are littered with the ghosts of broken promises, but this one was destined to become reality. Timeless sounds abound on Country Club, driven by Doe s gorgeously rough-hewn vocals, the dueling thousand pound chops of the guitar-wielding Good brothers and The Sadies world class rhythm section of Mike Belitsky and Sean Dean. Here,
the Countrypolitan sound of late 1960s Nashville is filtered through the telecaster-based honky tonk of Bakersfield, CA and the results are simply stunning. Classic tunes by Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings stand alongside corkers by Tammy
Wynette and Roger Miller, all of them getting unique treatments by Doe and The Sadies. The album also features four originals - three from The Sadies and one courtesy of the timeless pairing of John Doe and Exene Cervenka. On Country Club John Doe and The Sadies find the perfect blend of the reverent and the experimental, resulting in a slightly psychedelic brew that just might pass for straight if you re not lookin .

Wooden Wand - Born Bad

Wooden Wand - Born Bad
Mad Monk, 2009 | Mp3 320 k | 83 MB | 12 Songs, 36 Min.

2008 was the worst year of James Jackson Toth's life. It all began when, in the midst of an ill-fated and ill-conceived 57-day tour, his entire band - including his wife and partner of ten years - bailed, leaving Toth to finish the tour on his own. His life those next three weeks was a cross between Vanishing Point and The Brown Bunny, as our hapless hero, determined to honor his obligations despite anything resembling good sense, was left with nothing but time alone. Time alone to reflect. Time alone to be self destructive. And time alone to write. Over 50 new songs were written and recorded between the middle of the tour and Christmas 2008, during which time Toth, now sans wife and band, "celebrated" his 30th birthday, suffered a driving-related arrest and subsequent evening in jail, split with both his manager and record label, discovered that even his meager record store job back home was no longer available, found his utility bills had doubled, and survived what he calls his "Bukowski Christmas." Clearly, he was being tested. The only music that made sense to him during this time was power electronics and the "Roadhouse" station on XM satellite radio. Born Bad is the product of these very dark days, an group of songs that, when presented to the label in demo form (as they appear here), was very likely the final nail in the coffin of Toth's relationship with said label. A close friend who heard these songs advised Toth to never let anyone hear them. Though Toth concedes that a good deal of the record is not autobiographical per se, the almost comically intimate tunes are certainly more direct and personal than anything Toth has released during his 12 year recording career. In as much as they represent a snapshot of an especially trying time, Born Bad is the summation of hard luck, alienation, and being humbled by hard times. Toth himself freely admits that he can only vaguely recall the recording of several tracks. Maybe that explains the ridiculous drum machine. As for the sound, imagine if Peter Grudzien had written Blood on the Tracks, Conway Twitty recorded an album for Siltbreeze, or Simon Finn attempted to recreate the Roger Miller discography on 4 track. Born Bad is chock full of songs about betrayal, doubt, disenchantment, despair, touring, nosy music journalists, abandonment, self-abuse, and even one song that name-checks Toth's favorite brand of conditioner. (Hey, it can't be total fucking darkness.) Free from any contractual obligations for the first time in nearly ten years, Toth decided to self-release the album (actually a co-release with the great People In A Position To Know label out of Olympia,WA) as a way of closing this particularly trying chapter of his life. This strictly limited vinyl release boasts colored vinyl, a complete lyric sheet, hand-screened covers, and a free download coupon. For this release, Toth has chosen to return to the name Wand, a moniker which has always been lucky for him. As for the run of personal hardship and extremely bad luck - well, Toth seems to be mostly over it all now, or at least well on his way. But the songs survive, as songs do. I bet his next album is gonna be mainstream as hell. -78 GraveAtlanta, GA, January 2009

Grand Duchy - Petits Fours

Grand Duchy - Petits Fours
Cooking Vinyl, 2009 Mp3 VBR Near 256k 52 mb 37 Min.

Frank Black has always produced his best work when his more masculine tendencies are tempered by a feminine touch, and such proves the case on Petits Fours, on which he and his wife, Violet Clark, join forces as Grand Duchy. It was an alliance, if not of opposing forces, then of opposing attitudes. "She digs the Eighties," claims Black. "I had spent the latter part of the Eighties doing my part to destroy the Eighties." Yet the decade is the dominant touchstone for Petits Fours, with Clark's synth parts recalling The Human League in "Seeing Stars", and combining with Black's po-faced croon in the manner of Ultravox and Tubeway Army for "Black Suit", a perfect pastiche of the era's blend of style and alienation. Not that Frank comes too willingly along, slipping reassuringly into his Black Francis scream at points, and bashing out dirty buzzsaw guitar riffs with alacrity on tracks such as "Lovesick", which recalls "Brown Sugar", and "Long Song", which could be by The Killers. But his gentler side is responsible for some of the album's most engaging moments, notably the beautiful pop melody of "Ermesinde" and the seductive "Come On Over to My House", an invitation that includes the promise "I'll make you buckets of tea/Put your breath inside me".
